Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Here’s a little personal fact you might be surprised to hear: I didn’t read my first Dr. Seuss book until I was 18. At the time, I was in New York with my stepdad, Gene Johnson. I had just graduated high school and was on a gap before starting university, with about eight months to explore life in between.
While helping him reorganize the bodega (a storage room filled with memories), he pulled out a worn copy of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (1990). We sat down and read it together. I can’t think of a better moment in life to receive that book.
So no, my journey into children’s books didn’t happen randomly. That copy—my first—lives back home in Brazil. And now, a new version lives on Georgia’s shelf. Her copy was a gift from our dear friends Dan, Jenn, Morgan, and little Audrey. It’s a party edition with a sparkly cover and all the wonder inside.
This morning, as the sky stayed heavy with clouds, I curled up with Georgia and read her the story. She stared at the colors and shapes while I felt goosebumps, page after page. Dr. Seuss’s rhythm and wisdom somehow still feel like magic—even more so now that I’m reading it aloud as a mother.
✨ And if you’ve never seen it, here’s a beautiful video of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! being read at Burning Man 2011.
It’s full of dust, heart, and unexpected emotion.
